The Eco-Schools Litter Legends Grants recipients for registered Eco-Schools have been announced.

Grants of up to $500 have been awarded to 24 schools to assist Australian Eco-School committees complete a Litter Legends project. This project is funded by the Wrigley Company Foundation and contributes towards the International Litter Less Campaign.

Peter McLean, CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful National Association, who are the national operator of Eco-Schools, said “these grants help litter prevention on a global scale, and will be evaluated internationally.”

“This is the first time this international grant has been offered in Australia.”

Recipients will be undertaking projects that specifically tackle litter in their school and community. This could include:

  • Improve bin provision, locations and signage
  • Development of the school curriculum to enhance litter education
  • Whole school awareness campaign
  • An incentive scheme, with prizes for the tidiest classroom or yard
  • Adopt a local litter hotspot, get a team together to clean and improve it
  • Work with a community group like a fishing club or a surf lifesaving club to investigate litter impacts on local rivers or foreshore habitats
  • Work with a local business, design ideas for reducing litter from their product packaging or other business activities.

The Litter Less Campaign aims to reduce litter and affect long-term behaviour change among youth. Eco-Schools is a global program that has been running for 20 years internationally, and became an Australian program in 2014.
